Relief Carved PlaqueThis was the first carving I ever tried many years ago. It was very shallow on an old hard piece of Mahogany. The results were discouraging, so I didn't try again for 10 years. WOOD: MahoganyVarnish
SantaThe Santa is the first 'in the round I’ve done. It followed a pattern in a magazine and is made from a bass wood. I cut out two 3D profile on a scroll saw. My daughter painted it for me and her great work hides a lot of my learning curve. WOOD: Bass wood
Pot of Flowers PlaqueThis was an Intarsia project in a magazine. I changed it into a carving project as an experiment. Each piece was cut out on the scroll saw then carved. They were then glued together to form a plaque. The pot is mahogany reddened by wiping it with Drano. WOOD: mahogany, yellow heart, poplar, araba, walnut
Cabin SceneI took a second more advanced course at Lee Valley. This scene uses perspective to make the illusion of depth.WOOD: BasswoodSpray Lacquer.
Wolf PlaqueThis is a high relief carving of a wolf head. It was part of an eight week introductory course at Lee Valley. The eyes had many problems and the nose looks somewhat crooked. The fir was done with a pyrograph. WOOD:BasswoodSpray Lacquer
Carved Indian BoxThis box is a basic bandsaw box (I was able to use my scrollsaw so there is no entrance cut). The shape is an arrow head and the horse head is carved with slight bit of stain on the mane and the feather. The image comes from an ink drawing I bought off of an old Indian.WOODClear CedarLacquer
Carved SignThis sign is made from an old piece of Alder and although it looked great it split in from the right side after it was hung on the door. The letters were carved, a dark walnut wiping stain was brushed into them and then the final sanding was done.WOODalderLacquer
Box LidThis is a simple bandsaw box. The lid has a rose carved in high relief sloped down away from the centre.WOODcedarLacquer
